As part of our National Lottery Heritage Fund supported project exploring the history of witchcraft in the North East, join us at St Mark's Church, Millfield for a unique hands-on ceramic workshop where history, heritage and creativity come together.
Bellarmine pots, sometimes known as "witch bottles", were widely used during the 16th and 17th centuries as protective objects. People believed these distinctive stoneware vessels could ward off witches, break curses and protect households from evil spirits. Often buried beneath doorways, fireplaces or hidden within the walls of homes, they have become some of the most fascinating archaeological discoveries connected to beliefs surrounding witchcraft and superstition.
