The 1673 Witchcraft Accusations: A Guest Talk with Dr Katie Liddane
As part of our National Lottery Heritage Fund project exploring the history of witchcraft in the North East, Broadside Creatives invites you to a focused and thought-provoking guest talk examining the 1673 witchcraft accusations.
Delivered by historian Dr Katie Liddane, this session will explore a period when formal witch trials were in decline, yet accusations had not disappeared. By the 1670s, legal scepticism towards witchcraft was growing, but belief remained embedded in everyday life. Accusations often emerged within communities themselves, shaped by personal conflict, economic hardship, reputation and fear of the unknown.
Drawing on historical evidence and regional context, Dr Liddane will unpack what we can understand about these later accusations, including how they were recorded, how they were responded to and what they reveal about the social dynamics of the time. The session will consider how ideas around…
